Rare first Dutch edition, first issue, of this popular work by one of the most original English writers, Laurence Sterne (1713-1768). Starting only to write at a mature age - he was 47 when the first two parts of his first work 'The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy' appeared - Sterne continued to publish part after part until the ninth and last part appeared in 1767. Full of Rabelaisian humour, Tristram Shandy soon became immensely popular. The present Dutch edition faithfully followed all the typographical eccentricities of the English original. The fifth volume contains the Dutch translation of Yorick's sentimental voyage of 1778, also in first edition. Sterne's originality prevented other writers of his century from imitating him, his influence appearing only in twentieth-century literature, especially in James Joyce's works.
Fine set.- (Some bindings sl. damaged).
