Important edition of the collected (three) works by Publius Papinius Statius (ca. 45-96), a Roman poet of the Silver Age of Latin literature born in Naples, also known for his appearance as a major character in the Purgatory section in Dante's he Divine Comedy. This edition is edited by Friedrich Lindenborg of Hamburg (1573-1648; under the feigned name of Tiliobroga), who studied, together with his brother Heinrich, from 1594 till 96 in Leiden; both were pupils of the famous Scaliger. 'This is the esteemed as the first critical edition of Statius's works, and contains the Scholia of Lactantius on the Thebais and Achileis; the latter, for the first time from a MS of Pithoeus. It has various readings, notes, and a copious index. The edition may be coonsidered as a useful repertory, compiled with great care, and every way worthy of the critical talents of Lindenbrog' (Dibdin).
The subjects of the first work, the Silvae vary widely. Five poems are devoted to flattery of the emperor and his favourites. Six are lamentations for deaths, or consolations to survivors. Another group of the Silvae gives picturesque descriptions of the villas and gardens of the poet's friends. As to the rest of the Silvae, the congratulatory addresses to friends are graceful but commonplace.
Next follows an epic poem, the Thebaid, which the poet says took twelve years to compose. The text is in twelve books, and has for its theme the old "tale of Thebes", the deadly strife of the Theban brothers.
The third poem is the Achilleid, an unfinished poem of Statius. It describes the early life of the Greek warrior Achilles: a charming account of the hero's early life with Chiron the centaur, and the time when his mother Thetis disguised him as a girl on the island of Scyros.
