The best description of Switzerland
[STANYAN, Abraham].An Account of Switzerland. Written in the Year 1714.   Edinburgh, Printed by Hamilton, Balfour, and Neill, 1756. Small 8vo. Modern half calf, spine ribbed, gilt and blind-stamped, with red title-label. VII, (1), 232 pp. Second edition of easily the best description of Switzerland up till its publication. Coxe made use of it for his description, Johnson highly praised it, and Lord Chesterfield recommended it in his letters to his son. The author, Abraham Stanyan (1669-1732), in 1705 was sent to the Swiss cantons as envoy, and successfully concluded some delicate missions, as England was then at war with France. After the Treaty of Utrecht he returned to London and wrote the present account, first published anonymously at London in 1714. This first London edition is extremely rare. The second edition was then published in Edinburgh in 1756. The book still is valued for its accurate information. Fine copy.
