Rotterdam, Wed. J. Allart, 1829. 8vo. Contemp. half morocco, spine ribbed and gilt with the gilt crowned coat of arms of Leyden in three compartments. With view near Thale on lithographed title, fine lithographed frontispiece-view of Wildeman by Desguerrois after a design by the author, and 2 full-page lithographed views by J.B. Breukelman. 238, (2) pp.

First edition of a finely illustrated travel book, describing in letters to friends at home a walking tour undertaken in the German Harz Mountains, which were, next to the Rhine, among the most favoured German recreation areas for the Dutch leisure class. Jacobus Petrus Sprenger van Eijk (1777-1859), was minister of the church at Rotterdam. Although the book was probably not directly intended for use at schools, it certainly was used for school-prizes as is proved by our copy. As the heydays of school-prizes were past by now, the bindings were no longer standard, and the coat of arms of the school's hometown is here rather small and present on the spine only.

Fine copy, with large folio folding prize certificate of the "Gymnasium Leidense", the prize awarded to A.A. Land, dated 1852, and among others signed by the Rector, W.H.D. Suringar.- (Spine professionally restored).
Saalmink p. 1827; not in Tiele, or elsewhere found recorded no similar prize-binding in 'De prijs is het bewijs', or in 'aanvulling'.
