The 'most complete edition of the dialogues' by the humanist scholar and dramatist Speroni. (Brunet V, 488).
These 17 humanist dialogues treat various subjects; love, the dignity of women, family life, language, rhetorics, active and contemplative life, history, etc. of which the 'Dialogo delle lingue' is the most important.
Together with some other texts which were published in Italy during the 16th century, the dialogues of Speroni were of great influence for the upcoming French poetical circle around Ronsard. In his work dedicated to the Italian sources  of the work  ''Défense et illustration de langue française'' by Joachim Du Bellay, Pierre Villey proved that the rise of poetry in French is largely to be contributed to the 'Dialogue des langues', which defends the vernacular languages against Latin.
The collection is divided in 3 parts. The first two parts consist of dialogues: i.a. Dialogo d'amore (written in 1537 and published in 1542), on the nature of love, Dialogo delle dignità delle donne, on the status of women,  Dialogo delle lingue, a defense of vernacular languages instead of Latin,  Dialogo della retorica, Dialogo della istoria, 2 dialogues on history, etc. The third part contains Apologia.
The Aldus printing company published this collection for the first time in 1542 and reprinted them five times. Another Venetian edition exists, printed by Giolito in 1558, but the present one is according to Brunet the most complete.

Sperone Speroni degli Alvarotti (1500-1588), was born in Padua and studied under Pomponazzi in Bologna. Subsequently he taught Logic, and philosophy in Padua, then he returns to Bologna where he is appointed to lecture at the court. In 1560 he is sent to Rome by the Duke of Urbino, where he is highly esteemed by colleague scholars and dignitaries.
