Corneliszoon Speelman based on the Dutch Journal of kort verhael van begin, voortgangh en eyne des oorloghs tusschen den koningh en verdere regeeringe van Macassar.. (Landwehr 238), Amsterdam, against the sultan of Makassar during 1666-1669 on behalf of the VOC. Speelman, admiral and governor-general, (1628-1684) lead the expedition against the sultan of Gowa (= Makassar). The sultan was fought because he wanted to keep the port of Makassar open for all nationalities, not just for the Dutch. As a prominent Islamic leader, he was also opposed to the converting of the islamic islanders to calvinism. The sultan was defeated and submitted to VOC control by the treaty of Bungaya (18th of November 1668). Good copy.
