Paris, Buisson, 1787. 2 vols. 4to. Contemporary half calf. With large folding engraved map, full-page engraved view of the Cape of Good Hope, and illustrations on 15 engraved plates, of which 5 large folding. XXIV, 478; 462 pp.

First French edition of an extensive description, nicely illustrated, of the Cape of Good Hope, its original inhabitants, the flora and fauna, etc., by the Swedish explorer, physician and botanist Andrew Sparrman. He had travelled to the Cape as tutor to the children of the sub-governor Mr. Kerst, and at the Cape was encouraged and supported to undertake excursions into the country. When the English exploring expedition under Captain Cook visited the Cape, Sparrman was invited to join and in 1772 he sailed on the Resolution. In March 1775 he was back at the Cape and with a friend he went on an expedition into the interior for almost a year, penetrating through Kaffir-land as far as Bruntjes Hoogte. The account of their travels is highly interesting and instructive, correcting many inaccuracies in Kolbe's earlier account of the Cape. The part of the work devoted to his voyage around the world with Cook also represents a valuable contribution to the wealth of information Cook's voyages produced. The book was first published at Stockholm in 1783 and became immediately very popular. It was translated into most European languages.
