The sea dike west and east of Medemblik: the costs for protecting North Holland against the North Sea

Extremely rare booklet, containing a detailed estimate of the costs considered necessary for the reinforcement of the sea dike west and east of Medemblik ('Looze werken': work to be done for safety reasons). This is the sea dike of the Water board (Hoogheemraadschap, Waterschap) 'De Vier Noorder Koggen', the four districts (kogge's) comprising the area in the region Western-Friesland of the Dutch province North-Holland, including the villages Abbekerk, Midwoud, Opperdoes, Sijbekarspel, Twisk and Hauwert, north of Hoorn. The estimate is divided in summing up the estimated costs for the dike in the 'Hoogwouder Kogge' (pp. 1-4), the 'Wognummer Kogge' (pp. 4-6), the 'Middel Kogge (pp. 7-9), and the 'Medemblikker Kogge' (pp. 9-15), protecting the land against the North Sea. The estimate, dated 14 Apri 1835 is drawn up by the secretary of the Vier Noorder Koggen, Gerrit Spaander (1775-1847), residing in Abbekerk. His name is mentioned on the last page. The total costs are estimated at 58,972 guilders. Our copy is interleaved with blanks containing manuscript annotations in ink and pencil dating from 1845-72, written by the dike-reeve of the Baarsdorpermeer(polder) Klaas Koster, including drafts of his letters to the Royal Commissioner of North-Holland relating to his appointment as dike-reeve in 1864 and 1866, recipes for cow diseases, a note on the severe winter of 1844-45, etc. Fine copy.
