Contemporary mottled calf, spine richly gilt in compartments with title lettered in gold. With engraved scabrous frontispiece. (20), 483 pp. Second edition of this rare popular book ('The comical and entertaining life of Louwtje Zevenhuizen, or the family fencing school, in two parts. Followed by the African and Asiatic guide, describing different countries and regions'), containing the following four parts which each have a separate title-page with the same imprint: (1) Schermschool der Huislieden, of het koddige leven der boeren, bestaande in minneryen, vegt- en snywerkhoudens (p. (1-18), 1-115); (2) Lusthof der Boeren, of schermschool der huislieden, bestaande in ... (p. 117-290); (3) De Gelukszoeker over zee, of Afrikaansche Weg-wijzer, beschyvende verscheideb gewesten, ten dienste van zulke, die in hun vaderland niet konnen bestaan (p. 291-381); (4) De Aziaansche Weg-wijzer, vertoonende verscheide landstreken, ten dienste van die geene, dewelke haar geluk in andere gewesten moeten zoeken (p. 383-483). The first two parts contain a curious, very realistic and unexpectedly lively description of the rough morals, customs and traditions of the people in the country side, especially in the Netherlands. The Afrikaanse weg-wijzer was written for the benefit of Dutch fortune hunters who can't make a livelihood in their native country. They are urged to go to the Cape of Good Hope, Mauritius or other parts on the African continent. The Cape itself is described from the earliest period of European occupation, with some description of Simon van der Stel's journey into the interior. Also in this part is a description of the Isle of Pines, the island where Joris Pines was shipwrecked in 1589 and where he was the ancestor of no less than 1789 children and grand children; this description is after a publication of 1688. The last part is on the (voyage to) the East Indies and the unknown South Land, together with information on Java, Ceylon, Formosa, Ambon, Ternate, Celebes and Borneo. The two first works were first published in 1694 and 1695 respectively; the four works together for the first time in 1704. Fine copy.
Landwehr, VOC 1542-1543 (parts 3-4); Tiele 1015; Cat. NHSM p. 1039; Mendelssohn II, p. 413-14; Waller 1573; Buisman 2147; Muller 504 & cf. 503; De Vries 242; Scheepers I, 432 (this copy!) ('Rare').
