Avignon, François Girard & Dominique Seguin, 1739. Contemporary mottled calf, spine richly gilt in compartments with morocco title label, lettered in gold, marbled endpapers, red painted edges. With 270 woodcuts in the text illustrating positions and moves on the blackgammon board; 2 of them are full-page, showing 'sensible' and 'insensible' combinations of two dices, (8), 320, (4) pp.

Very rare first edition of this popular treatise to learn the game of backgammon, with 270 woodcuts illustrating various positions and the progress of the game on the playing board. The dedication is signed L** S**, being the initials of L'Abbé Bernard Laurent Soumille, from Villeneuve-les-Avignon in France.
The only copies of this edition we could trace, are found in the British Library (1) and the NCC (2). Many later editions appeared during the 18th century (1754, 1756, 1766, etc.) testifying of the success the book has had.

Good copy.- (Top of spine damaged; sl. browned to the end; corner of p. 223/4 lacking without affecting the text; ownership's entry on title made invisible).
Hargrave 208; not in Gumuchian; NUC locates only two copies.
