Interesting description of England including accounts on new scientific inventions as well as a lot of gossip
SORBIERE, Samuel.Relation d'un voyage en Angleterre, où sont touchées plusieurs choses, qui regardent l'estat des sciences, & de la religion, & autres matieres curieuses. ![]() ![]() ![]() Cologne, Pierre Michel, 1666 (= Amsterdam, Elzevier, 1666?). 12mo. 19th century red morocco, spine gilt in compartments with title lettered in gold, triple gilt lines along the edges on both sides, inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, g.e.(Duru). With woodcut vignette (celestial sphere of A. Wolfgang) on title and a double-page engraved plate showing the construction of a platform capable of carrying a heavy weight. (12), 192 pp. Second anonymously published edition of this very interesting account of a voyage to England by Samuel Sorbiere (1615-1670), a French physician and author of many (sometimes less important) books. The dedication to the King, however, is signed 'Sorbiere'. During the 40s of the seventeenth century Sorbiere lived in Holland where he was in contact, and in correspondence, with many of the Leiden scholars such as Vossius and Heinsius and his countrymen Sarrau and Saumaise then professors in Leiden. In 1650 he was appointed director of the Collège d'Orange. In this account Sorbiere gives an interesting picture of England and the towns and regions he visited, with a certain emphasis on religious affairs and above all on new scientific inventions. He also describes his visits to famous scholars such as Prof. Med. Wallis and the mathematician Prof. Willis in Oxford , Hobbes whom he very much admired, le chevallier Moray, Prince Robert, Robert Boyle, and many others. Because of the things he tells us of count d'Ullfeld who had married a natural daughter of the Danish King Christian IV he was arrested and banished to Nantes. The first edition of this book was published in Paris, by Billaine, in 1664. The present edition, as well as an other edition in the same year 1666, are according to Brunet printed by the Elzeviers. Willems, however, comments: "Quoi qu'en dise Brunet, ni l'un ni l'autre n'appartiennent aux presses elzeviriennes", but he describes the edition among the 'Editions hollandaises, Annexes aux Elzeviers'. Very good and nicely bound copy.
