Miniature edition of 'little pug', the most popular of all Dutch love songbooks
[SONGBOOK - MINIATURE].'t Nieuw Groot Hoorns Lied-boekje, bestaande in veel stigtige en vermakelyke bruylofts liedekens.   Hoorn, Reinier Beukelman, ca. 1720. 32mo. Contemporary calf, spine ribbed with gilt flowers in the compartments, sides heavily gilt tooled with 6 fillet and ornamental borders, with floral ornaments and small lozenge shaped ornament in centre, gilt board edges, gilt and colour decorated endpapers, with 2 silver clasps. Woodcut on title and woodcut endpiece, some musical scores. 311, (9) pp. Miniature songbook, easily the most popular of all Dutch love songbooks. Size ca. 7,5 x 5 cm. The book was lovingly called "Mopsi" (little pug), because it was not only small but usually also very bulky. Here the songbook is somewhat less bulky, because only one part was published. As the publisher explains in the preface, many songs were left out because he never heard people sing them anyway, and he furthermore wanted to avoid discussion afterwards, but some new songs were added instead. The popularity of the songbook was by no means confined to Hoorn, but, like the "Enkhuizer Almanac", the book was popular all over the Netherlands. Its small size was both very practical and attractive. The songbook was republished numerous times from the 17th to the 19th century, but today copies are rare and much sought after. Good copy in beautiful binding.
