Songbooks such as these, also known as mopsjes, were frequently used at weddings and funerals, where people traditionally sang together. The name mopsje is probably reminiscent of Mopsus, the shepherd who appears in many of the poems in Virgil's Bucolica. The earliest of these songbooks date from the first quarter of the seventeenth century. Collective editions soon appeared, with songs from two or more cities. This collection, containing songs from Hoorn, Enkhuizen, Alkmaar and Purmerend, with Edam added on the title of the second part ('t Groot Hoorns, Enkhuyser, Alkmaarder, Edammer en Purmerender Liede-boek. Zijnde een vervolg op 't voorgaande versierd met verscheyde nieuwe en aangename bruylofts-liedekens en Snaakze gesangen. Amsterdam, Joannes Kannewet, [ca. 1762]), has also odes addressed to the various cities, such as O Schoone Stad van Purmerend. The book mainly consists of wedding and love songs, but also includes musical discussions, pastoral and drinking songs. There is also a song on the traditional Dutch December festival of Sinterklaas: Lof van Sint-Nicolaas. Most of the songs are anonymous, only a few of them are signed with the author's name. Fine copy.
