Pers, ca. 1610)). Fourth edition of one of the most important as well as rarest Dutch songbooks, published for the 'jeunesse dorée'. Songbooks were a very popular genre in the Netherlands during the last quarter of the 16th and first of the 17th centuries - the beginning of the Dutch 'Golden Age'. These songbooks were mostly printed in oblong format, and they were undoubtedly in one way or another connected with the new genre of the love-emblem book, so characteristic for the new Dutch Republic. The Nieuwen Lust-Hof was first published in 1602 in Amsterdam by the publisher Hans Mathysz. It was the first songbook in a format different from the previous ones: more modern, more airily, finely printed in another more modern typeface, the Civilité, and above all beautifully illustrated with plates illustrating the courtly songs in an apropriate way. The songbook turned out to be very popular and a second edition was printed between 1604 and 1606 by the widow of Hans Mathysz. In 1607 an enlarged edition with the same plates was published by Dirck Pietersz. Pers in Amsterdam: Den nieuwen verbeterde Lust-hof, the first book printed by this prolific publisher. Our fourth edition (ca. 1610, most probably 1609) is a re-edition of the third. The songbook originally contained 63 songs, 24 short poetical texts ('entremets'), 2 madrigals and one sonnet, and the Bruylofts-Bancket (with seperate pagination, but in the order of the colllation of the Nieuwe lust-hof (ff. O-Q4)), by Michiel Vlacq from Gouda. The songs are published anonymously and are mostly signed by a motto, of which some can be identified as meritorious Amsterdam rhetoricians. Some of the 'entremets' are by the famous poets Roemer Visscher and Hendrick Laurensz. Spieghel. Among the songs and poems that were added by Dirck Pietersz. Pers in the third and fourth editions, however, are four poems by the young P.C. Hooft and at least three by the young Vondel, furthermore two by Karel van Mander and two translations of poems of Ronsard by Jacob van der Schuere. The publication of the poems of two of the greatest Dutch poets of the 17th century means that this songbook is of the utmost importance for the Hooft and Vondel philology and bibliography. Both Hooft and Vondel saw themselves for the first or second time in print in this songbook (see the bibliographies by Leendertsz, resp. Unger)! There are also many important variants in the text of these poems compared with the standard editions. The beautiful large engraved plate on the title of a company making music and drinking wine in a bower in a garden ('The Concert'; repeated on second title) is after the painter, draughtsman and engraver David Vinckboons (1576-1633) from Malines, who moved to Antwerp in 1579 and in 1591 to Amsterdam. The 9 half-page engraved plates (ca. 128 x 90 mm) of courting couples are probably by the same artist (also after Vinckboons?) and are commissioned especially for the Nieuwen Lust-hof by Hans Mathysz. in 1602 (one plate is new in the third and fourth ed.). Often the name of Claes Jansz. Visscher (1587-1637) is mentioned, but 1602 seems to be too early for this artist. Very fine copy of this rare songbook, nicely bound in a bibliophile red morocco binding (1921); from the library of the famous book collector General Jacques Willems.
