Written by the famous French "Écuyer" Jaques de Solleysel (1617-1680), Le parfait marechal is a handbook on horses covering everything from how to improve a horse's teeth, to the various bits one can use. Solleysel was the son of an officer of the "Gendarmes Ecossais", one of the cavalry regiments that participated in the entry of Louis XIII into Lyon in 1622, where the young Jaques studied with the Jesuits. From 1645 to 1648 he accompanied the Friench Plenipotentaries to the peace negotiations in Münster. Upon his return to France he started his own equestrian school in Clapier near St. Étienne, but later went to Paris as Écuyer de la Grande Écurie and assisted Bernardi, a former student of his, to set up an equestrian school.
Jacques de Solleysel was popular with his contemporaries for his pleasant company, integrity and erudition, as well as being a talented musician and painter (the frontispiece and many of the illustrations in Le parfait marechal are thought to have been drawn by him).  Perhaps his only weakness was the habit of writing eulogies addressing himself as "Monsieur de Solleysel, my master" under the name of La Bessee.
The first edition of this classic on horses Le parfait marechal (The perfect stable master) was published in Paris in 1664. An English translation appeared in 1717. Solleysel was a veterinarian rather than an écuyer. He established the first serious foundations of hippology and described with precision the conformation and gaits of the "serious" horse.
