Early edition of one of the most popular English writing books
[SNELL, Charles].Copy-Book. ![]() ![]() London, 1694. Oblong folio. 14 lvs. (of 25) with calligraphic specimen, engraved by Elder. 1 leaf with introductionary poem by Joshua Barnes, and one leaf postscript by Charles Snel. Early edition of one of the most popular English writing books. No title is present, but the poem is dated 1694, and several of the calligraphed leaves are signed and dated 1693, and 1694. Unfortunately only part of it is present, the lvs. 3-8, 13-15, 17-18, and 23-25. These calligraphic modelbooks often were broken up in single leaves to be distributed among the students. Acceptable copy of a rare writing-book.- (First and last printed lvs. browned and frayed at edges; calligraphed border of 3 lvs. cut or torn off; waterstained).
