(52), 179, (3) pp. First edition of the main work of the Remonstrant author Dirk Smits (1702-1753), attractively illustrated by the famous engraver Jan Punt (1711-1779), and dedicated to stadtholder William IV. With preliminary poems by Lucretia Wilhelmina van Merken, K. Westerbaen, Pieter Langendijk, Arnold Hoogvliet and some others. The work is divided into 3 cantos, and concluded by 37 pages of annotations, which contain among other things some interesting topographical information. Smits was a member of Natura et arte and a celebrated author during his lifetime. His fame, however, declined in the nineteenth-century, until Willem Kloos re-discovered the Rotterdam poet in 1909. Fine untrimmed copy.
