With woodcut title vignette (as in 9). (8), 83, 43 pp. One of the early 18th-century editions of the collected poetical works by Willem Sluyter (1627-1673) with a general title and the nine poetical works which were published by Gysbert de Groot, his widow, or the heirs of his widow between 1716 and 1722. Willem Sluyter, a Voetian minister at Eibergen in Gelderland, was one of the most popular edifying poets of the second half of the 17th century, also called 'de Gelderse Cats'. His simple, didactic spiritual songs, set to the music of popular songs or psalms, made Sluyter the real 'national poet' of the more simple believers. His works were being published many times from the '60s of the 17th, all through the 17th and 18th centuries. Even in the 19th century two collected editions appeared in Rotterdam, M. Wijt, 1839 and 1861. His songs can be seen as the calvinist pietist continuation of the 'Schriftuurlijke Liedekens' from the early days of the reformation. Sluiter studied at the University of Utrecht at the time of Gisbertus Voetius. In 1653 he was ordained as a minister at Eibergen. The strong bond between minister and parish, to which Sluiter remained attached until his death in 1673, is very remarkable and appears in several of his poetical works. Ad 1: First ed. Delft 1668; Blokland, Ch. V, p. 189-213, p. 309, nr. X; Scheurleur, p. 69. This is Sluyter's most literary and poetic work. It shows a delight in in the play of words and sounds, which was in vogue in huis days. The poem bears resemblance to the 'Georgic' genre of the glorification of country-life, but even more to Thomas a Kempis' love of solitude. In the second part it also describes Sluiter's life as a hermit in the parsonage of Eibergen and it has the form of a self-defence. Ad 2: First ed. Amsterdam 1670 (no copy known); Blokland, p. 144-50, p. 323, nr. VIII; cf. Scheurleer, p. 70. Dedicated to his parish at Eibergen. Ad 3: First ed. (Delft?) 1671 (no copy known); Blokland, p. 150-156, p. 328, nr. VIII; cf. Scheurleer, p. 69-70. This work contains a number of hymns for the vaious hamlets around Eibergen and for his parish at Eibergen itself. Ad 4: First ed. Delft 1677; Blokland, Ch. VII, p. 248-60 p. 300, nr. X ('The only complete copy in Freuiburg i/Br' !); cf. Scheurleer, p. 71; modern ed.: Houten 1987 with a preface and introduction by A.J.H.G. Ronhaar. This is a good example of the popular genre - particularly in pietistic circles - of 'euthanasia' writings, in which the death of the faithful was described. In this moving poem Sluiter describes the sick-bed and the death of his young wife. Ad 5: First ed. Amsterdam 1687; Blokland, Ch. VII, p. 250-63, p. 339, nr. VI; cf. Scheurleer, p. 71. In this poem Sluiter addresses, as it were, his parishioners from his grave. Ad 6: First ed. Amsterdam 1687; Blokland, p. 156-63. p. 342, nr. VII; cf. Scheurleer, p. 72. Ad 7: First ed. Deventer 1661; Blokland, p. 121-38, p. 293, nr. IX; cf. Scheurleer, p. 68. Ad 8: First ed. Amsterdam 1682; Blokland, p. 175-85, p. 333-4, nr. IX; Scheurleer, p. 72. Ad 9: First ed. Amsterdam 1669; Blokland, Ch. VI, p. 214-42, p. p. 318, nr. VIII; Scheurleer, p. 70. This work starts with a eulogy upon St. Mary, followed by criticism on the Rom,an Catholic worship of her. Bescause of a frequent use of paradoxical turns it remind us of the baroque poetry of the 17th century. Good copy, with ms. ownership's signature in ink on inside frontcover: Abraham Yzerman, 4 november 1887, Leerdam.- (Binding sl. soiled; some dampstains throughout).
