Arnhem, Iacob van Biesen, 1654. Folio. Contemporary gilt calf. Richly engraved title, large folding general map, 5 double-page maps of the regions of Nijmegen, Zutphen, Roermond, de "Wiltbaen" and the Veluwe, 10 double-page engraved plans with a view above of Nijmegen, Tiel, Zaltbommel, Roermond, Venlo, Zutphen, Doesburg, Arnhem, Harderwijk and Wageningen, 16 smaller plans and views, of which 7 on 2 double page plates, and 9 on six smaller plates, of Gelre, Stralen, Montfoort, Doetinchem, Lochem, Hattum, Elburg etc., 28 woodcut coat-of-arms and some woodcut illustrations of coins in text. (16), 116, (4); 596, (24) pp.

First edition of the first complete, topographical and historical, History of Gelderland in Dutch, by Arend van Slichtenhorst (ca. 1615-1657), who studied in Leyden and became a laywer in his native city Arnhem. As acknowledged on the title, the work was based upon, and partly a translation of Pontanus' Latin Historiae Gelricae, published in 1639, but Slichtenhorst thoroughly revised, corrected and much enlarged the Latin original. The plates, designed by Nicolaas van Geelkerken,  also partly had been used in the Pontanus and are here present in a somewhat reduced format. The large folding general map comes from the Atlas Maior by Willem Blaeu, bearing the publisher's adress.

Good copy, of an important, fine illustrated work.-(Binding with some minor imperfections).
Nijhoff-Van Hattum 281; Gouda Quint, Bibliogr. Gelderland, p.8; Bodel-Nijenhuis 582.
