N.pl., 1840. 8vo. Contemporary calf, gilt spine with small ornaments in compartments, both covers with single lozenge border, gilt binding edges and double fillet border on the inside, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. With numerous architectural illustrations in pen and ink with grey and coloured wash on 30 pages, numerous manuscript tables. 61 stiff paper lvs., partly with text or illustrations on recto only, partly recto and verso.

Very neatly written and delicately illustrated manuscipt manual for architects, with chapters on i.a. mining, fractions, profiles, batteries, trigonometry, surveying, protracting, levelling, 'to conduct water', extraction of roots, theory of walls, counterforts, theory of arches, mensuration of vaults and arches, theory of timber, mechanic powers and Hadley's quadrant. In many chapters specific examples of the problems involved are included.
Furthermore, a large portion of the manuscript is filled with neatly ruled and filled out tables, for instance on the kinds of soil, Valliere's table, Muller's table, table for cube boxes, specific gravity, table for batteries, table for stone walls without parapets, table for brick without/ with parapets, table containing the thickness of the piers of bridges and table for pumps.
Apart from the general text and the many tables, the manuscript is delicately illustrated, partly to clarify the theories and problems in the text, but also showing the diminution of columns, the construction of mouldings etc. Especially noteworthy is a series of very fine grisaille watercolours on 11 pages at the end, depicting the five classic orders.

Well preserved manuscript.- (First leaf with the name of the author waterstained in blank corner; binding neatly rebacked with use of the nearly complete original backstrip; outer corners neatly restored).
