Editio princeps of an Arabic work on the youth of Christ, popular with the heretic sect of the Nestorians or Chaldeans at Syria, Persia, and Egypt
[SIKE, Henricus (Ed.)].Evangelium infantiae. Vel Liber Apocryphus de Infantia Servatoris. Ex Manuscripto edidit, ac Latina versione et notis illustravit Henr. Sike. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Utrecht, Fr. Halma, Gul. vande Water, 1697. Small 8vo. Original boards. With large woodcut vignette on title, title printed in red and black. (24), 94 pp. Editio princeps of a popular Arabic text, here published together with the translation in Latin. A rare and curious work, presenting at the one hand a critical text-edition for the Arabic language-student, and at the other hand it is de facto the editio princeps of a manuscript, very popular in the Near and Far East, and containing an Arabic Gospel of the Youth of Christ, belonging to the so-called apocryphe bible literature. Compiled from older apocryphe evangelies, like the Proto-Gospel by Jacobi and the Thomas-Gospel, and enlarged with all sorts of Western religious legends, it was especially popular with the Christian heretic sect of the Nestorians or Chaldeans at Syria, Persia, India and Egypt. It also spread to the far East, to China, India and Japan. The editor, Henricus Sike, came from Bremen in Germany, and at the time he was a student at the Utrecht University, where he made a great impression on Reeland, a.o. Later he became professor in Hebrew at Cambridge, in England. Good copy of a rare work.
