SIGONIUS, Carolus (Carlo Sigonio)Fasti consulares, ac triumphi acti a' Romulo rege usque ad Ti. Caesarem. Eiusdem in Fastor, et triumphos, idest in universam Romanam historiam commentarius. Eiusdem de nominibus Romanorum liber. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Venice, Paulus Manutius, 1556. Folio. Later half mottled calf, boards covered with marbled paper. Title written on bottom edge. With the woodcut Aldine printer's device within wreath on general and part titles, woodcut initials and two small woodcuts in text. 16, 169 [=165], [1] ll. Second much enlarged and most important Aldine edition of this highly important work for the chronology of Roman history by Carolus Sigonius (Carlo Sigonio or Sigone) (1524-1584). As well as the very rare first edition printed in 1550 by Ant. Gadaldin in Modena, which edition is even more concise, the first Aldine edition of 1555 under the title Regum, consulum, dictatorum, ac censorum Romanorum Fasti, una cum triumphis actis ... is much shorter: 34 fols., without the commentary (Renouard, p. 166, nr. 16: "Elle (ed. 1555) est sans intéret, vu les corrections et augmentations de la suivante de 1556 (our edition) dans laquelle se trouve un commentaire un peu long, mais nécessaire pour l'usage de ces Tables chronologiques". Sigonio was an Italian humanist, born at Modena. Having studied Greek, he attended the philosophical schools of Bologna and Pavia, and in 1545 he was elected professor of Greek. In 1552 he was appointed to a professorship at Venice, which he exchanged for the chair of eloquence at Padua in 1560. To this period of his life belongs the famous quarrel with Robertelli, due to the publication of the treatise De nominibus Romanorum (also in our edition), in which he corrected several errors in a work of Robertelli on the same subject. Sigonius accepted (in 1563) a call to Bologna. He died in a country house purchased by him in the neighbourhood of Modena, in August 1584. The last year of his life was embittered by another literary dispute on a spurious text by Cicero. Sigonius declared that, if not genuine, it was at least worthy of Cicero; those who held the opposite view (Antonio Riccoboni, Justus Lipsius, and others) asserted that Sigonius himself had written it with the object of deceiving the learned world, a charge which he explicitly denied. Sigonius's reputation chiefly rests upon his publications on Greek and Roman antiquities, which may even now be consulted with advantage, the Fasti consulares, with his commentary in the first place. It is the first work in which the history of Rome is set forth in chronological order, based upon some fragments of old bronze tablets dug up in 1547 on the site of the old Forum. The most complete edition of Sigonio's works is that by P. Argelati (Milan, 1732-1737), which contains his life by L.A. Muratori, the only trustworthy authority for the biographer. Contents: f. 1: Title (verso blank). f. 2: Dedication of the original Modena edition to Hercules II, duke of Ferrara by Sigonio, dated Modena 7 March 1550. f. 3r-16r: Text of the Fasti consulares ... f. 1: Separate title for the commentary: Caroli Sigonii in Fastos consulares, ac triumphos Romanos commentarius. (Venice, Paulus Manitius, 1556) *(verso blank). f. 2r-3r: Dedication to Laurentius Priolo by Sigonio, dated Venice, 14 July 1556. f. 4r-5r: Preface. f. 5r-151r: Text of the commentary. f. 152r-169(=165)r: Caroli Sigonii De nominibus Romanorum liber. 1 f. with errata. First title a bit frayed; a few minor stains; binding slightly rubbed. Good copy with collector's ticket of 'Canterzani', and two small stamps on title (two angels with intitials 'N.B' (?).
