(16), 448 (= 450), (13) pp. Rare first and only edition of this important, comprehensive and influential history of the Christian missions to Japan by Joseph Sicardo (1643-1715). Sicardo was a Spanish Augustinian who was appointed professor of theology at the university of Mexico in 1688. He also was the synodal visitor of the Bishopric of Mochoacan. The work is dedicated to Rodrigo Manuel Fernandez Manrique de Lara, Comte de Frigiliana y de Aquilar (p. (3-6)), and includes reports of the sufferings of many martyrs and substantial material on the embassies exchanged between Japan and the Philippines. Fine copy preserved in a modern morocco-backed half calf box with two red morocco inlays on the front cover with texts (title and extensive note) lettered in gold.- (Spine a bit browned).
