Antwerp, Joannes Graphaeus for Joannes Steelsius, 1560. 8vo. Very interesting strictly contemporary Flemish (Antwerp) full calf  binding, blind tooled with a roll with the four portraits of Venus, Juno, Pallas and Paris (the protagonists of the Judgment of Paris; roll: ca. 20 x 127 mm.) along the edges of both sides enclosing a rectangular centre area with floral roll and small floral stamps. With printer's device of Steelsius on the title and small woodcut initials. (451) lvs. (A-Z, 2A-2Z, 3A-3K8, L4-1 (last blank lacking).

Eighth edition of this important and early Latin - Dutch dictionary, partly also with the Greek equivalents by Joannes Servillius, or Jan Knaep, or Knapius from Roermond (fl. ca. 1520 - 1560). In his dedicatory letter to the printer/publishers Johannes Steelsius and Michiel Hillen (van Hoochstraten) at Antwerp - dated Antwerp 1545 and written for the first edition of that year, published by Steelsius and, under a separate title in 1546 by Michiel Hillen -, Servilius states that he has composed his dictionary because there were hardly any dictionaries with Dutch as one of the languages available, apart from some primitive lists and the Latin-German dictionary of Petrus Dasypodius, the Dictionarium latino germanicum from 1535, which was translated into Dutch by Antoine Schorus in 1542. This translation was taken by Servilius as the basis for his own dictionary. Servilius, however, has added two important things: many citations mentioning the author and Greek translations of many entries. He also expanded the number of especially Flemish words.
The dictionary of Servillius has had a great success with many re-editions till far into the seventeenth century.
