Rare complete copy of Glazemaker's translation of Seneca's Moral works

Ad 1: Rare complete set of Seneca's moral, or ethical works and 124 letters dealing with moral issues, translated by J.H. Glazemaker.
The first volume consists of two parts, each with their own title page and pagination:
(part 1), dated 1658: Eerste deel der zedige werken ... bestaande in verscheide stichtelijke handelingen, strekkende om d'ongevallen des levens te verdragen ...: the translation of the following works: De Ira (On anger), a study on the consequences and the control of anger; Ad Helviam matrem, De consolatione (To Helvia, On consolation), letter to his mother consoling her of his absence during exile; De Consolatione ad Polybium (To Polybius, On consolation), consoling him on his missing son ; Ad Marciam, De consolatione (To Marcia, On consolation), consoles her on the death of her son; De Providentia (On providence); De Tranquillitate Animi (On tranquillity of mind); De Constantia Sapientiis (On the Firmness of the Wise Person); De Clementia (On Clemency), written to Nero on the need for clemency as a virtue in an emperor; De Brevitate Vitae (On the shortness of life), essay expounding that any length of life is sufficient if lived wisely; De Vita Beata (On the happy life);
(part 2), dated 1657; translation of De Beneficiis (On Benefits) in seven books: Boeken van de weldaden; aan Ebucius Liberalis geschreven: lerende het recht gebruik, zo wel in 't geven, als in 't ontfangen der weldaden ...'. The colophon at the end of the second part mentions Tymon Houthaak from Amsterdam as printer.
The second volume contains the letters, the translation of the Epistolae morales ad Lucilium, a collection of 124 letters dealing with moral issues written to Lucilius: Tweede deel der zedige werken ... Bestaande in honderdvierentwintig brieven, aan Lucilius geschreven ... The Dutch translation of these letters was first published in 1654 by Gerrit van Goedesberg in Amsterdam under the title Alle de brieven van L. Annaeus Seneka aan Lucilius geschreven... An issue with a new title was published in 1658 to form the third part of the 'collected works of Seneca'. Here are the letters in the second edition, printed for Johannes Dalé by Alexander Jansz. in 1671.
The last volume is printed in Amsterdam in 1661 for Gerrit van Goedesberg, also by Tymon Houthaak with the title: Darde en leste deel der werken ... Bestaande in Naturelijke zaken, daar in van de verscheide werkingen van de natuur gehandelt word; in zijn Apokolokynthosis, of Spotreeden over Klaudius doot; en in Herelijke spreuken, tegen d'Armoede, en tegen veel andere ongevallen, the translation of the works Naturales quaestiones, in seven books, offering an insight into ancient theories of cosmology, meteorology, and similar subjects; and his Apocolocyntosis divi Claudii (The Pumpkinification of the Divine Claudius), a satirical work, also containing references to Nero as having a longer life than Nestor at the hands of the three fates - obvious flattery.

Ad 2: Original edition of Glazemaker's translation of eight of Plutarch's virtuous writings, namely Van de naturelijke liefde der ouders tot hun kinderen, Van de broederlijke liefde, Van 't geklap, Van de gerustheit des gemoeds, Van de quade schaamte, Van 't geval, Van de haat en nijt and Van de begeerte tot rijkdom.

Jan Hendrik Glazemaker (1620-1682) was a prolific translator of many literary and philosophical works. His first translation was from French into Dutch and published in 1643. During the 1640's he learned Latin and also started translating works from that language. He translated over 60 works from Latin into Dutch. Glazemakers translations stand out by those of his contemporaries because of their simplicity and punctuality. The two present translations are often found bound together in three volumes.
