Rare original and only edition of the Latin translation of Seiz's work celebrating the third centenary of the invention of  printing at Haarlem by Laurens Jansz. Coster, originally written and published in Dutch.
The work is dedicated to the Archbishop of Canterbury by the printers Isaac and Joannes Enschede. After the dedication, which is dated Haarlem 31 March 1742, there are poems on the invention of printing by Laurens Jansz. Coster, by Hugo Grotius (1611), Petrus Scriverius and Pieter Langendyk.
Seiz wrote his work mainly to remove the doubts that were rising in the beginning  of the eighteenth century as to the claim of Coster from Haarlem, being the real inventor of printing. Seiz undertook to furnish a true and rational account of the invention, bringing forward an entirely new chronology, which - in fact alas! - is to be attributed totally to an imagination disordered by national pride. This rare book is nevertheless very important for the history of printing as it shows the ardor and enthousiasm with which the case of the place where printing with movable types was invented was pursued.
Of course this was a very suitable book for the Haarlem Latin School and the Haarlem authorities to present to the best pupils of the year and to let it be bound in their 'prize binding'. An interesting point is that the stamp with the Haarlem coat of arms and the motto 'Vicit vim virtus' which is used on this binding, is unknown to Spoelder, the author of the reference work on Dutch 'Prize-bindings'.

Good copy.- (Binding stained; with contemp. ms. notes and additions in brown ink in a small regular hand on last endpapers)
Bigmore & Wyman, Bibliogr. of printing, I, p. 334-6 (with extensive note); cf. J. Spoelder, Prijsboeken op de Latijnse school (2000), p. 588-92 (Haarlem); the Centr. Cat. mentions only one other copy in a Dutch Publ. or Univ. library.
