Contemporary full calf, gilt and decorated spine with title lettered in gold, marbled endpapers. With engraved frontispiece with the allegorical figure and coat of arms of the Dutch States of Holland, Zeeland, Friesland and Utrecht, and with 36 large full-length engraved portraits of the Counts of Holland in text by Adriaan Matham of which the first and last are dated 1620. (8), 280 pp. New edition of the earliest Dutch Chronicle of the counts of Holland, originally published at Gerard Leeu from Gouda in 1478, now first published with the comments and documents for comparison by Petrus Scriverius, a celebrated Dutch philologer, poet and historian (1576-1660). The book is richly illustrated with the finely designed and engraved series of portraits of the Counts of Holland by Adriaen Jacobsz. Matham (ca. 1600-1660). The first anonymous part of the chronicle starts in ca. 902 and continues to the death of Jacoba of Bavaria in 1437. The continuation until the death of Charles the Bold is said to be written by Jan van Naaldwijk. The second part, with its own half-title dated 1630, is the By-voegsel by Petrus Scriverius goes from 1478 until the death of King Philip of Spain on September 13, 1598. The third part, the Toets-steen (also with its own half-title) is Scriverius' critical commentary on the chronicle. "Scriverius tried to purify ancient history from fables and aberrations, but he sometimes threw out the good with the bad" (De Wind p. 425).
