Sm.8vo Contemp. vellum With fine engraved allegorical general title, woodcut of the crowned lion on separate title to the second part, 21 woodcut coat-of-arms, coins, inscriptions and illustrations of ancient relics and 37 full-page woodcut portraits within rich ornamental borders, with title above and verse underneath in the first part, and 25 similar woodcut portraits in the second part (14), 442; 320 pp. Nicely illustrated history of the Netherlands, starting with the oldest times reconstructed from the ancient relics, followed by the written history of the counts of Holland, Zeeland and Friesland, up till the beginning of the Spanish war, at about 1566. The portraits, 37 in all, include the princes of the House of Bavaria and Bourgondy who became counts of Holland in the 15th and 16th century, ending with the Spanish King Philip II. The second part presents the history of the Dutch war against the Spaniards, from about 1566 till 1646, and the portraits, 25 in total, include the various governors, like Leicester, Matthias of Austria, François of Valois, the Dutch stadtholders Maurits and Frederick Hendrick, but also the generals of both parties and the great admirals, like Alva and Spinola, Jacob Heemskerck and Piet Heyn, and even including a portrait of Hendrick Loncq, General of the West Indian Company and Theodorus Waerdenburg, general in Dutch Brasil. The book, which became rather popular, was first published in 1612 and several times enlarged and brought up to date. The present edition was the last to be continued and brought up to the date of its publication. The book is nicely printed in various lettertypes, mainly in Gothic with various Roman and Italic types inbetween. Fine copy
