Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), a Scottish writer and poet, is one of the greatest authors of historical novels, a genre that became immensely popular in the first half of the 19th century throughout Europe. In fact it was Scott who established the form of the historical novel and his work inspired such writers as Bulwer-Lytton, G. Eliot, and the Brontës as well as Alexander Dumas and Pushkin. Scott's novels made him one of Europe's most famous literary figures, and he was created a baronet in 1820. Willem Moll (1812-1879) was a professor in Theology and Church History at the University of Amsterdam.
Good copy with pasted ex-libris of Gratien van Hecke on inside of front cover.
