Autobiography by the most learned woman of the Dutch Golden Age
![]() ![]() ![]() Amsterdam, Jacob vande Velde, 1684. 12mo. Contemporary plain vellum; spine lettered in ink. [10], 343, [1] pp. Very rare original edition in Dutch of Anna Maria van Schurman's spiritual and passionate autobiography, translated from a copy of the first Latin edition of 1673 with corrections from her own hand. Anna Maria van Schurman (1607-1678) was unquestionable the most learned woman of the Dutch Golden Age, living in Utrecht and a member of the citcle aroud the orthodox Prof. Gisbertus Voetsius. At the age of 59, however, she rejected her old life-style to chose for, as she calls it, "the best part" ('het beste deel' from the title) and to become a member of the separist and spiritual congregation led by Jean de Labadie who wanted to go back to the Church of the Apostles and to establish a 'further Reformation' ('een nadere Reformatie'), rejecting the content, rules and objectives of the official Church. In her autobiography Schurman elaborates on De Labadie and his circle so that this work can be regarded as 'perhaps the best exposition of the tenets of her master' (Enc.Brit.). The book is also inspired by the Confessiones of Augustin. The engraved frontispiece portrait of the author, engraved by G. Munikhusen is not contained in this copy. According to the printed notice at the end of the preface on page (10) this portrait could be obtained from the publisher, just as all books Schurman mentions in this treatise. Copies found recorded are with and without portrait. Good copy of this rare work, however without the (seperately obtainable) portrait. Autobiographical, theological and philosophical treatise in which the author defends her decision to join De Labadie.
