Göttingen, H. Dieterich, 1813-1823. 2 parts in 1 volume. 4to. Pastepaper boards. With 2 title-pages, 8 folding engraved plates. 40; (1-2), 5-58 pp.

Monograph on the genus Verbascum or mulleins, a group of flowering plants in the figwort family that can be found in Europe and Asia. The first part opens with a general description of the genus followed by a list of eighteen species. The second part was published ten years later after the publication of Smith's Flora Graeca. Schrader continues the description of individual species to reach a total of 59. The eight plates show full-size specimens.
The second part opens with a title-page followed by leaf A2 (pp. 5-6) and A3 (pp. 7-8). The fourth leaf of the first gathering is used as the final leaf, H1, of the second part. The book is therefore complete. Of all the bibliographies, only Stafleu & Cowan note this aberration. Both parts had been published in German botanical magazines but this is the first time that they appear together in a book (see Stafleu & Cowan). Heinrich Adolph Schrader (1767-1836) was professor of botany and director of the botanical garden in Göttingen.

Good copy.- (Some slight browning).
BMC NH, p. 1859; Nissen, BBI 1800; Pritzel 8368; Stafleu & Cowan 11092; not in Arnold Arboretum.
