Leyden, Deventer, Groningen, D. du Mortier, J. de Lange, J. Oomkens, 1785-1828. 46 school books in 12 vols. Contemp. half calf. Several works illustrated with engraved plates. Ca. 250 pp. each volume.

Collected school books published by the Dutch Educational Society "Tot Nut van 't Algemeen", teaching on all possible school subjects. The Society was founded at Edam on November 16, 1784, by Jan Nieuwenhuijzen c.s. It aimed at the moral uplifting and general education of the Dutch people according to the principles of the Enlightment. In the first and most active period, from 1785 to 1834, the Society published some two hundred works both separately and collected in four main series: "Prijsverhandelingen" (Prize-winning Essays), with 83 works in 23 volumes, mainly concerned with general problems of morals and education; "Redevoeringen en Aanspraken" (Papers read at the Society's Meetings), with 47 works in 9 volumes; "Stukken van Onderscheidenen Aard" (Miscellaneous Works), which came to 19 works in 9 volumes. These included popular books, like song books, instruction and advice for the common people and workers, including farmers, sailors, small craftsman, etc., and also books about the history of the Educational Society and its commemorative publications. And finally the series present here: "Stukken het Schoolwezen betreffende" (School Books proper), with 51 school books in 14 volumes.
Here the  first 12 volumes are present with 46 exemplary school books on all possible school subjects. Included are primers, like  A B C books, spelling and reading books, books of proverbs, the history of Joseph, etc., as well as more advanced school books on arithmetic, history, natural history, natural science etc. The present series of school books is the most important and interesting, as the Educational Society "Tot Nut van 't Algemeen" was the predominant force in the modernisation of Dutch primary education since the end of the 18th century. All school books are here collected in their original issues, each with their own title-page and pagination.
