First edition of an advanced reading-book for schools, published by the Dutch Educational Society: "Tot Nut van 't Algemeen", to teach the reading of various styles of prose and verse with understanding and the right tone of voice. It was to be used after finishing all other reading books, and the teacher had to coach the pupils when reading aloud. The book contains small pieces of text taken from historical and literary works, essays and letters, from various authors throughout history, as well as some dialogues and poetry, all to be read in a different tone of voice.
