Haarlem, Erven F. Bohn, (1838). Sm. 8vo. Orig. half cloth, with green title-label. With illustration on engraved title and 6 full-page engraved plates. (2), 68 pp.

Nicely illustrated small book of verse by Lieuwe Schipper (1808-1870), schoolteacher at Velp. It is the first edition of his first children's book of poems, with an introductionary letter by the most popular author at the time, Nicolaas Beets. Beets had been asked to correct and edit the book. He is very positive about the poems and assures the author that almost nothing had to be corrected or altered. Schipper's poems became very popular and many volumes followed. The engraved plates show a winter-scene with skaters on the ice, a nice view into a class-room, etc.

Good copy.- (Spine-label sl. dam.; small tear in 2 plates).
