Amst., Hendrick Vleck, (ca. 1850). Oblong 8vo. Orig. lithographed wrappers. With 6 full-page lithographed plates, nicely coloured by hand. 32 pp.

Nice picture book with a story of a fox and a rabbit, obviously inspired by the popular fable of Reynard the Fox. At the end the fox is judged by a jury of monkeys, found guilty, and hanged. J. Schenkman is well known for his fine picture books, which he made in the 1860's for the publisher Theod. Bom at Amsterdam, and which were later taken over by the Amsterdam firm J. Vlieger. Jan Schenkman's books were much loved by Dutch children and consequently now are very rare and sought after. The present is a rare early Schenkman item, not found recorded.

Fine copy.- (Spine sl. loosening).
Cf. KLKL 571-572, and 574 (other picture books by Schenkman); Bibelebontse Berg p. 617, and 620.
