Gellert freely adapted
SCHENKMAN, Jan.C.F. Gellert's fabelen en vertelsels, vrij herzien voor de jeugd.     Amst., G.Theod. Bom, 1854. 8vo. Modern half brown cloth, with gilt title on spine. With tinted lithographed frontispiece and 6 full-page tinted lithographed plates, all beautifully finished by hand. (2), 136 pp. Fine illustrated children's fable book, freely adapted from Gellert's fables by the Dutch school-teacher Jan Schenkman (1806-1863). Schenkman produced a number of very attractive illustrated children's books, mostly published by G.Theod. Bom at Amsterdam, and much sought after by the collectors of today. G.Theod. Bom was a rather famous Amsterdam publisher of children's books too, especially "en vogue" for his fine colour-printed and hand-coloured lithographed plates. The present collection of fables was intended for young children, a similar volume for the somewhat older children was published at about the same time as well. Fine copy.
