Oxford, At the [Sheldonian] Theater, sold by George West and Amos Curtein, 1674. Folio. Contemporary calf. With engraved frontispiece, folding engraved map, and numerous woodcut illustrations in the text (one repeated on the title-page). [4], 147, [1] pp.

First English edition of a celebrated ethnographic monograph on Swedish Lapland by the German-born professor Johannes Gerhard Scheffer (1621-1679). The work was originally published in Latin as Lapponia in 1673 and immediately translated into English, German, French and Dutch. Scheffer's account is based on "authentic records, the testimony of Historians, and the Discourses of the Laplanders themselves", as stated in the preface, and provides us with valuable information on the Lappish religious, material and social culture, with chapters on the cults and ceremonies of the Lapps, their houses, diet, clothing, trading customs, handicraft, entertainment, hunting, and marriage and death customs. The charming woodcut illustrations include a hunter on skis. "This history long remained the main source of information on Lapland" (Cox).

Binding restored. Good copy.
