Paper making from all sorts of woods and plants, and other materials
SCHAEFFER, Jacob Christian.Proefnemingen en Monster-Bladen, om Papier te Maaken zonder Lompen, of Met een gering Byvoegsel derzelven. Uit het Hoogduitsch vertaald. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Amsterdam, J.Chr. Sepp, 1770. 2 parts in one vol. 4to. Contemporary half cloth. With richly engraved allegorical frontispiece by I.N. Maag after the author, printed in blue, illustrating the process of papermaking, 32 specimen of paper-leaves made of different natural materials, and 5 full-page engraved plates, of plants and honeycoms by I.N. Maag and G.P. Traubner after Loibel, finely coloured by hand. (4), 56, (2); VIII, 32 p. Extremely rare and only Dutch edition of an interesting book of specimen showing the results of paper making from all sorts of woods and plants, including experimental materials as wasps' nests. The original German edition appeared in six separate volumes between 1765 and 1771. The books were published in a limited edition because they include paper specimens. The added engraved plates show some of the trees and plants used for the production of some of the paper specimen present. Jacob Christian Schäffer (1718-1790) is the key figure in the search for an appropriate substitute for rags in paper-making. He studied at Halle and was Minister of the Church and Superintendent at Regensburg in Germany. He was a man of many interests, who combined his theological studies with exhaustive studies of nature. His comprehensive book on mushrooms was considered the standard work on the subject till well into the nineteenth century. Schäffer being a typical exponent of the eighteenth century, his research on alternative ways of paper-making could only be very thorough. His publications played a crucial role in resolving the problem of the ever growing lack of rags, leading to the new methods of papermaking. Good copy of an highly interesting work.- (One of the two specimen made of hopvines, no. 11 from the first part, is lacking, and the second specimen made of the residue of hemp, no. 2 from the second part is broken in two, due to its quality).
Poggendorff II, 768-769 (German ed. only); Kress 6754; Hunter, 37, says that he never saw another copy than his own of the first volume; the second remained unknown to him; Accoord C.R. Tentoonstellingscatalogus KB, Den Haag, 1986, nr. 69; Honderd hoogtepunten uit de Koninklijke Bibliotheek, Den Haag, 1994, nr. 67.
