Designing fortifications
SCALA, Giovanni.Delle fortificationi. Nuovamente ristampate con agiunta d'diverse piante e fortezze. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Roma, Gioseppe de Rossi, 1627. Folio. Contemporary limp vellum. With engraved title within richly designed military emblematic borders with coat of arms at the top and a plan of fortification at the bottom, 100 elaborately designed and engraved plans and perspectival drawings of detailed parts of fortifications on 50 numbered plates, 10 engraved plans and perspectival designs of full fortifications on 5 plates, 2 engraved illustrations of a canon on 1 plate, and 5 double-page engraved plates with perspectival designs and full plans of fortifications, including a beautiful bird's eye view of the heavily fortified harbour of La Rochelle. (70) lvs. Entirely engraved pictorial manual on the art of designing, measuring and drawing in perspective, maps and plans of fortifications. With next to the engraved title and 63 engraved plates, of which five are double-page, an engraved leaf with dedication to Taddeo Barberino is present, dated 1627. All explanatory text is engraved on the plates. About the author, Giovanni Scala, no further information could be found; he probably was a mathematician, as the present designs represent pure applied mathematics, i.c. practical geometry for the designing and planning of fortifications. Most of the engraved plates are also signed with "Ioan. Scala, Math. Inventor". The book had first been published in Rome in 1596 under the title Delle Fortificatione matematiche, Cockle listing also a similar title, published in Rome in 1603: Della prattica della geometria necessaria per l'architettura militare e fortificazione. The present edition is much enlarged compared with the edition of 1596. New perspectival designs are added, as well as models of existing fortifications, depicting - apart from an entire ring of fortifications defending La Rochelle both from the land- and from the sea-side -, also the fortified cities Civita Vechia and Macerata. The book is very rare. Good copy.- (Binding sl. rubbed; lower margin of title cut off; few lvs. sl. browned; small wormholes in last lvs.).
Riccardi I, 2, 426 ("opera rarissima"); Cockle 818, 800 (ed. of 1603); STC, 17th century, 830-831; cf. Jähns p. 848 (ed. of 1694).
