Venice, Seb. Combi, 1614. Folio. Contemporary vellum. With woodcut printer's device on title, 2 double-page tables, and 23 double-page woodcut plates. (20), 266 pp.

Second edition, published by Cesare Campana after the author's death, of the most important of Italian text books on military science at the end of the 16th century, first published in 1599. Mario Savorgnano (1513-1574), in Venetian service, wrote the book for the instruction of his young nephew. The book is divided into four parts, the first treating the military functions and main weapons, the infantry and the cavalry. The second book is devoted to marches and army-camps, the third part to battles, and the fourth part to fortification.
The importance of the book lies in the fact that the author next to the usual examples of ancient warfare also gives many examples of modern warefare, a.o. discussing the battles of Bouvines, Oudenaarde, Rivolta and Bicocha, all supported by illustrations. Although the use of modern historical military examples for theoretical application is already found with Macchiavelli, Mario Savorgnano was the first to apply practice on theory with such consistency and supported by such clear plans and drawings. Another important feature of the work is its systematics. Savorgnano's classification of military subject-teaching became the prototype and shows the height methodic arts reached in the 16th century.

Good copy, with the bookplate of Anne S.K. Brown.- (Binding sl. rubbed; wormholes at the beginning).
Cockle 587; Jahns I, pp. 580-583.
