Interesting 16th century edition, edited and enlarged by Johann Jessenius (1566-1621), of a collection of philosophical works on logics, ethics and physics, and science by Girolamo Savonarola (Ferrara 1452 - Florence 1498). Johann Jessenius  or Jessensky (1566-1621) was a physician and professor in philosophy. Savonarola was a famous Italian preacher and reformer, whose zealous attempt to uproot corruption ended in martyrdom. In 1474 Savonarola joined the Dominicans. Preaching in Florence, he openly attacked the corrupt and aristocratic associates of the ruling Medici family.
Following a French invasion in 1494, a republic was established in Florence from which the Medici was excluded. Savonarola became the democratic republic's guiding and animating spirit. The attribution to Savonarola of a supernatural gift of prophecy and his extravagant interpretation of the Scriptures led to charges of heresy in 1495. After all sorts of difficulties, a sentence of excommunication came from Rome. In 1498 Savonarola was declared guilty of heresy and seditious teaching, sentenced to death, hanged and burnt.
