First edition, very rare, of a description of the topography, customs, language, arts and governement of New Zealand before white settlement, by John Savage, surgeon. Savage was one of the first travellers, such as Cook, Bligh and Marion de Fresne, who  explored New Zealand, but he was the first to write an account on his visit.
Savage (1770-1838) arrived in New South Wales in 1803 and  introduced vaccination to the colony. On his return to England, he took back a Maori named Moehanga (Moyhanger), the first New Zealander to visit England. A part of the text is devoted to the voyage to England of Moyhanger and his stay in London (pp. 94-110). Savage drew three illustrations, one of a Maori Chief, a tiki deity, and one with coastal lines.

Good copy.- (Some foxing esp. on title).
