Ad 1: Extremely interesting set of 12 prints. The plates numbered I-VI are satirical plates of the French mocking the Dutch. The Dutch deserve to be punished for their greed. In the last 6 plates, lettered A-F, the roles have been reversed, and the Dutch manage to shake off their attackers. The print-series was originally published in France in 1672, and in 1673 in Holland. The Dutch edition includes the answers by the Dutch on the French satirical plates. By 1673 the Dutch were recovering from the injurious invasion of the French of the last year, and gained enough courage to give their comments. The answer-plates are especially worth attention, because of their beautiful workmanship.
The prints show some interesting similarities and differences, which might be pointing to two different artists. )

  • Ongeneeslycke siekte/Le mal incurable.- Cartoon on the capture of several Dutch cities by the king of France. On the foreground on the left a Dutch man is sitting on the front of a wrecked ship, spewing several cities from his mouth, making the ground before him look like a map. ) The Dutch answer contains 3 small engraved caricatures on the bishops of Munster and Cologne and on the king of France.)
  • Hollants truer-toneel/Veu tragique d'Hollande.- In the middle on a table a large cheese is lying, on which a French rooster is standing picking pieces from it, while the chained Dutch lion is lying at the table leg, his chains being held by an English dog.b & c)
  • Small engravings on either side of IIa. The left one is titled "Daer uijlen slapers zijn, daer hout een haen de wacht".) The answer to IIa. As a counterpart, this engraving bears most resemblance to the opposing engraving. Here the rooster and the dog are vehemently attacked by the lion.)
  • La maladie guarie par la dance/Ziekte door dancen genesen.- In the middle a sick woman is sitting on a chair, surrounded by six men and one woman. One of the men is feeling her pulse.)
  • Hostel de fous incurables.- Title engraved above the entrance to a madhouse, into which the bishop of Cologne (?) is running, on whose mantle a few cities are indicated by their names. )
  • France druck-pers/Presse Francoisse.- Within a colonnade of 8 arches a press is being tightened by two men. Between the press a man is lying (Dutch) loosing - because of the pressure - a number of cities and villages. ) At the right on the foreground an English man; the Dutch lion is standing with his back paw on his chest while tearing up the French rooster. )
  • De moedige Batavieren/Le vaillans Bataviers.- At the right a woman is sitting in a tent, smoking a pipe. )
  • The breakthrough of the dike, constructed under the order of the bishop of Munster of the river Vecht. A comparison can be drawn with the watermasses of the Red Sea at the time of the running of the Jews under Moses. )
  • De Hollander/De Fransman.- The title is engraved on two sides of the plate. A table is depicted shaped in front as a memorial stone, with a French man bending over the right side, while at the left side a Dutch man is sitting smoking a cigarette. )
  • From the clouds Peace is coming down, complaining that there is no room for her. plates E and F it is apparent that these engravings were not made before 1673, since the breakthrough of the dyke happened in October and the conquest of Rijnbach, etc., in November.

  • All of the plates are accompanied by French satirical verses and a translation in Dutch, the Dutch answers are rhymed as verses, and accompanied by translations into French.
Extremely rare series. Muller proposes J. Harrewijn as the engraver.

Ad 2: Rare and interesting work on the history of the Netherlands during the time of the French war, starting in 1671. The work is attributed by Knuttel to Johan Gribius, who lived during the 17th century, but on whom we were unable to find more data. The first part is in fourth edition, the second part in second edition, and part three and four both in first editions. Several plans of Maastricht, Woerden, Groningen, and many more Dutch cities are added.
