Nergens, Jillis Overal, in de Steekel-Baars, 1716. 8vo. Contemporary half roan. With engraved frontispiece, showing Momus performing in the street, pulling "Bon Mots" from his magician's bag, with two men watching, and a little monkey in de foreground holding a card with the title. (8), 248 pp.

Rare first edition of a very popular book, published anonymously under a fictitious publisher's address, presenting hundreds of anecdotes, funny jokes, and amusing stories. The frontispiece resembles the performance of a quack doctor, who is usually accompanied by a little monkey, while the title refers to the work of magicians. The book however, does neither contain quack recipes, nor magic tricks, except for Momus himself, who like a quack or true magician is able to pull an anecdote or amusing story out of his bag at any time and for any occasion. People loved to quote such anecdotes at parties or at weddings.
In the preface the anonymous printer and author admits that he published the book for his own interest only, and that his having to stay at home to write instead of going to the pub was most "profitable". The anonymous author nor the fictitious publisher's address have yet been solved.

Good copy.- (Binding rubbed, but firmly restored; traces of use).
