Amusing literary work on the life and customs at the Spanish court in the 17th century
SANTOS, Francisco.Periquillo el de las Gallineras. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Valencia, heirs of Gabriel de Leon, 1704. 8vo. Contemporary limp vellum with title written in large characters on spine. Woodcut printer's device on title. (16), 258 (= 256; p.96 jumps to 98 without loss of text) pp. Third edition of this amusing and 'picaresque' work in which Santos "se combinan el picaro y el loco aparente que habla con apotegmas de sabia ironía". Francisco Santos (1617-97) was a soldier in the Spanish guards during the reign of Philip IV. His works are important for the knowledge of the manners and customs of his time, especially at court. The book was first published in Madrid in 1667. The second edition (Madrid 1668) has the same collation and pagination: probably the 1704 edition is a second issue with a new title-page. Good copy.- (Marginal water stain in first half of the book).
