Venetia, F. Sansovino, 1560. 4to. 19th century half vellum. With woodcut printer's device on title, large variant of the printer's crescent moon device on last blank, and  hundreds of woodcuts in text, of herbs and plants, and incl. some serpents, mice and insects. (4), 187, (1) lvs.

Rare first edition of an encyclopedic treatise on gardening, published under pseudonym by the popular Italian author and publisher, Francesco Sansovino (1521-1586). The work is based on a large number of classical and modern authors, a list of whom is given in the preliminaries, a.o. on Pliny, Virgil, Varro, Galen, Crescentio, Cesare, Mattioli and Dioscorides. The  second book is entirely devoted to viticulture and wine, and the fifth book treats the gardener's enemies, like serpents, mice, insects and other pests, as well as the remedies against them. The book is richly illustrated with hundreds of woodcuts, nicely  decorated with woodcut initials and headpieces with putti and grotesques, and with arabesque ornaments, and finely printed in a small Italic type.

Fine clean copy.- (Small bookplate and old ink annotations on first endpapers; some very sl. staining).
Harvard, Italian, 459; Hunt 87 (2nd ed. of 1561); Simon, Bibl. Bacchica, 636; not in Nissen, Pritzel, Stafleu, nor in Adams.
