18th century school-edition of one of the popular works by the famous 16th century Italian poet Jacopo Sannazzaro (1458-1530). With his "Arcadia", the first "pastorale" published, the poet wielded a lasting influence on West-European literature. Still, his "Eclogae", originally written in Latin, was judged to be the better work. A pendant to his famous pastorale the "Eclogae" depict the life of fishermen in the way the "Arcadia" had depicted the life of shepherds, and instead of the customs and activities of life in the country the praise was sung of the life and work of the people living near the borders of the sea.
