Third and final Dutch edition of a popular travelbook with descriptions of the Turkish Empire, Egypt, the Holy Land, Italy and several islands, including Malta and Crete.
Pages 106-107 include a description of the mountains of St. Catherina and Sinai and environment , located on the Sinai Peninsula (Egypt).
This work is one of the most famous travel books of the 17th century. At the time it was published it was considered as "the most elaborately illustrated English book on the Levant" (Blackmer).
The original English edition was first published in London in 1615 and by 1652 a 5th edition had already been published. The book also became popular in the Netherlands and was first published in Dutch in 1653 (Amsterdam, Jacob Benjamin). The second edition appeared in 1654 (Amsterdam, Jacob Benjamin and Utrecht, Lambert Roeck). The translation into Dutch was based on of the earliest English edition and has in the past usually been attributed to Jan Hendrik Glazemaker. The actual translator however, was Johannes Grindal, a pharmacist from Amsterdam, who translated over 20 books from English into Dutch. The engravings in text show illustrations and views of the Holy Land and were mostly copied after Zwallart's Voyage de Jerusalem, published in Antwerp in 1626.
