Philips, large folding and partly hand coloured map of India, including the Malabar and Coromandel coasts, Burma and Sri Lanka, and 3 full-page (emperor of the Mogols, male and female Mogol costumes) and 7 folding engraved plates by J.C. Philips (dated 1730-31) of Pegu and Arrakan costumes, pearl fishermen at Toute Koryn, view of Kochin, Indian pagodas and fakirs, Indigo and cotton plants. (8), (3-680), (8) pp. Original edition of an extensive description of India and regions east of the Ganges, present Burma (Pegu, p. 3-50; Arrakan, p. 51-103; India, p. 107-570), and Sri Lanka (Ceylon, p. 571-680). The book was published as part 3 of the series: Hedendaagsche historie, of Tegenwoordige staat van alle volkeren, which was started in 1729 by one of the most enterprising Amsterdam publishers of the 18th century, Isaac Tirion. He started this series originally as a translation of the English project, the Modern history, or Present state of all nations, published by Thomas Salmon (1679-1767) since 1725. The Dutch translator, M. van Gogh, added his own comments to the first volumes, but soon he completely reworked the English original, and the Dutch series developed into a quite independent and popular series of 39 vols. (1729-1803). A complete set, however, is very hard to find. This volume is still important because of the notes and comments which were added by Van Goch, and which partly were based on the notes of Gerrit Voogt, merchant and in service of the VOC, providing valuable information on the role of the Dutch and the Dutch East India Company in India and Sri Lanka. In the seventeenth century the Dutch were in the possession of most of the Malabar and Coromandel coasts of India and the coasts of Sri Lanka. Good copy.- (Library stamp on title page; marginal tears in map repaired; somewhat damp stained in the first 150 p.).
