The fifteen delights of marriage by the tutor of le roi René
(143x80mm). Dark brown chagrin with gilt border and centrepiece, spine gilt in compartments, lettered in gold, g.e. (FRANCIS BEDFORD). With woodcut printer's device on the title ('Deo duce') and a half-page woodcut (75x60mm) of a fyke in which men are caught, relating to the first chapter, on p. 19. Several interesting woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces. 186, (6) pp. Rare third edition of this work edited by Fr. de Rosset (c.1570 - c.1630), a French writer who, among other things, has translated Don Quichotte. He did this after a manuscript by Antoine de La Sale that is now lost. Antoine de La Sale (c.1385-c.1460) was an author who spent his life in the service of Louis d'Anjou. Later he became the tutor of Louis'son, the later King René d'Anjou. His most successful work was Le petit Jehan de Saintré (1456), an intriguing mixture of courtly romance and fabliau, ironizing everything except chivalry. In the present work the author elaborates on the same kind of themes, centered this time around the delights of marriage. It is considered to be a satire 'full of salt'. It was written by La Sale between 1448 and 1456 while he was tutor of the childres of the Count de Saint-Paul. The first edition of the work was printed without a date in Lyon by Oliv. Arnoullet and was edited by De Verdier; the second edition appeared in Paris in 1595. Further editions were published in 1604, 1606, 1607 and 1620. On five unnumbered pages at the end the Quatrains of honorable love ('Quatrains de l'honneste Amour, sur le devoir des mariez') are included, which are often lacking. Very good copy from the collection of Guglielmo Libri with etched bookplate with the monogram 'A.K.'.- (Some soiling on, and a small tear in the title-page, some skilfully executed paper repairs).
Tchemerzine, VII, 96c; Gay-Lem, III, 913; Brunet, IV, 1031; Grisebach 672; F. Desonay, Antoine de la Sale, aventureux et pédagogue (Liège 1960).
